Quality
or 'What's so special about this stuff then?'
There are plenty of plain silver rings on the market and many much cheaper than mine.
So why would you buy these ones?
It's a weight and a quality thing. As with so much of what we buy these days most silver jewellery is made in the Far East for a bowl of rice a week and with the metal weight and the quality of the finish brought down to a minimum in order to get the price even keener. Of course there is some good work being imported from those regions as well but as a rule the jewellery that we are offered and, consequently, the perception of what quality jewellery should look like has sunk very low.
On one level this is not such a bad thing as it means that you can buy a silver ring for £5.00 today and throw it away for another design in a month's time. This sort of quick adoption and discard policy seems to be the way that society in the West is progressing, if progress it can be called.
I work on a different basis. I want the things that I make and the things that I own to be of a high quality and to last. I've tended towards a classic style so that the jewellery I produce will be wearable for years and not just a season and I build each piece to stand the wear and tear of years rather than just a few months.
Returning to these rings then, you will find them solid, well made and well finished. Square edges are square, flat surfaces, flat and all are well finished. (Fast finishing leaves edges blurred and blunted and flat surfaces with undulations and grooves.) These rings won't distort into ovals when you bash them or catch them on a door handle (It happens!) and I would expect them to last you for life.
All this, I hope, will make the slightly higher price well worth paying. |
