Stained glass collection
This jewellery collection started with the ring. I was asked to make a white gold ring with a princess cut diamond between tapering shoulders. Having finished the piece I thought that it would look so much better if the curve in the shoulders continued into the stone and so I had a series of stones cut to follow the contours of the ring.
These stones are 'buff-cut' or unfacetted which means, in practice, that they present a solid vibrant slab of colour without the sparkle that facets would add. To my eye, this suites the solid form and definite lines of the piece. It does mean, however, that the stones have to be cut out of the best material so they're not cheap and I wince every time I break one when I'm setting it. (as in all 'proper' jewellery, the stone is held in by the metal and considerable force is needed to fold the metal down over the thin edge of the stone. Recipe for disaster really.)
