I think that it's something to do with them being so miniature and so many. if you've seen film of these little guys all emerging from the sand and lunging and flipping themselves frantically towards the sea, you can't help but wonder at their energy and determination, and they engage our emotions as we will them to make it past the stabbing beaks of the seagulls and the other predators that swarm the beach when they emerge, and reach the safety of the surf.
It's only by dint of their huge numbers that any make it to the sea and so it's a drama that arouses both our wonder and our pity. |
