Silver and gold laminate earrings.
These ones were going to make me rich.
The idea was to make a predominantly gold earring but at the price of a predominantly silver one.
The trick was to laminate a thin sheet of gold onto a thicker sheet of silver and then mill it down really thin to make the sheet go further. (Milling is the process whereby you squeeze the metal between rollers rather like a mangle.)
The gold and silver sheet is then punched out and domed and is enclosed in a silver surround that bends over the edges and retains it in much the same way that a gem stone is set.
Good plan... if only it were that simple.
I made them for a number of years but the time it took, pretty much outweighed the savings on materials and they went wrong far too often. The few I have remain as reminders of many hours of frustration and so I'm happy to see the back of them!
On the plus side, they are light and easy to wear and will make you appear much richer than you possibly are.
